I got my new case at Altex Electronics because I needed a new power supply and my HP case was not standard. They have a great selection and I got a lower-end case; but WOW, it was really a good one and well constructed too.

Need a solid but cool computer case. Which do you recommend?

I'm going to be traveling a bit between my college and hometown and would like to bring my desktop computer (a fairly nice gaming PC.) My current case has good airflow, but I don't think it would do well on the train and car trips I'll have to take. Is there a case that is solid AND allows good airflow? I need suggestions! Please help!Need a solid but cool computer case. Which do you recommend?
Any case aimed at lan parties would be a good choice, but you might have trouble with size.

The CM Storm Scout has handles for good portability, the Antec 300 Illusion is fairly small, has good airflow (not a fan of tri-cool fans, though, they're pretty loud, might want to grab some quieter ones with better CFM).

  • Can computer case fans be powered by batteries?

I have a couple left over case fans and they say they are DC so I was going to use them in a little project I'm making. Are the volts and amps listed the required to power it... also which type will work underwater.. I can remember if it's the magnetic type or what not...Can computer case fans be powered by batteries?
Most computer fans are 12 VDC. The voltage and current should be listed on the fan someplace. I don't think they'll work underwater. They're designed to move air and won't have the power to push the much heavier water. They should run for a bit under fresh water. I don't know how long they'd last in salt water. The best thing to do might be to get a small battery operated pump. Remove the pump part, being careful not to hurt the seal of the motor, and connect the fan blade to the shaft of the pump motor. Or maybe the pump itself can do the job you want the fan to do.

CUSTOM COMPUTER CASE help me find correct size?

The computer I currently have is:

Acer AMD Phenom X3 Triple Core 8400 2.1GHz Computer (AM1201-E1721A)

I would like to know what size type the motherboard is [ATX etc] so I can buy a bigger case. I will be buying the case from tigerdirect so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!CUSTOM COMPUTER CASE help me find correct size?
I have checked the specifications given by Acer but they do not give any information about the type of motherboard. There is a method of determing the type of motherboard which involves placing the computer sideways such that the side with the motherboard is closer to the floor and then looking into its back. If your computer has an ATX motherboard, the expansion slot covers should be on the right. If your computer has a BTX motherboard the expansion slot covers will be on your left. The positions are seen when looking into the back of the computer. Your computer will most likely have an ATX or micro-ATX motherboard. A micro-ATX motherboard will fit into a case for ATX motherboards but not the other way around.

What computer case should I get to lower my temps?

Ok I already have a case for my computer. BUT it has holes on the side to show off the very pretty, but totally usless blue lcd lights inside. I have had some temp problems and I think that the fans I have in the front and back aren't getting rid of the hot air cuz those holes don't allow a vacuum effect (my own theory). I have heard of cases that are airtight and can keep a computer really cool (like a refrigerator). but I can't find anything. So I need some help. Anything I can do to cool this thing down?

    Here is some Info:

I have a dual core amd 930 X2. 3G Ram. A evga 6800 GS PCI express vid card.

I really don't want water cooling!!!

Please help me out here guys. Thanks. What computer case should I get to lower my temps?
I used water cooling and thought nothing could beat it...until I bought one of those oversized heat sink fan/coolers. I was amazed. I am getting lower temps than I did with liquid cooling. What computer case should I get to lower my temps?
First make sure the inside of computer is free of dust, etc. Next make sure fans are clean, and all vents. Your fans may be in the wrong places to create the effect. I haven't heard of the airtight case and am not sure it would work. Go to pcworld.com and you may find lots of info to help you.
How do you know you have a temperature issue?

That setup should not have any issues with heat unless it is either completely clogged with dust, or overclocked a large amount.

The best type of case for cooling, in my opinion is pretty much anything aluminum.

Lian-Li cases are some of the best aluminum cases as far as construction and cooling is concerned.

You do not want a case to be airtight. That would not allow the heat from the components to be vented out and you would SURELY overheat.

What you want is a case that moves air in from the bottom of the case and out on the top, as heat rises. Ideally, you want to have an equal amount of intake and exhaust fans. You do not want to create a vacuum as that will cause issues with airflow.
Open your case and use a big fan to cool the system. It works for me in summer.

Or you can just get a bigger case. You might want to install some additional fan to cool the system.
There are so many cases now with 120mm intake fan up front and a STRONGER 120mm exhaust fan at the back. Pick the model w/ minimal obstruction to airflow. I prefer just a grill and not the tiny holes. There are good cases from Antec, Lian Li, Coolermaster, Thermaltake, etc. But there are cheaper ones (all steel).

Although IF and only IF it fits...you will have high temp problems...

(no cable management, a high end GPU will probably mess with your case airflow)

I recommend getting an Antec 902 case. It will run you about $120USD

    Are computer cases amd/intel specific?

will an amd mobo fit in a case that originaly housed an intel mobo?

building comp for friend, and i never use anything amd, and then he went and bought a amd processor, so he f'd me all up... any other building things i should take note of?Are computer cases amd/intel specific?
Nope they're not processor specific, cases are built upon ATX size standard, either the case will support ATX sized mobos, microATX sized mobos, and some have it setup for both. Are computer cases amd/intel specific?
No, both Cases and Power Supply Units are ATX format. There are two types microATX like the small ones used by Dell, and the larger midsize to fullsize ATX cases. The ATX cases will fit the smaller microATX or mATX motherboards. Contractors for Intel and AMD create ATX and mATX boards for these processors. No you fine with the case, you will just need to take out the motherboard and replace it with an Intel Motherboard. Also with Power Supply Units they are usually 12v ATX, this means they will fit both microATX and ATX formats.

    Have a nice day

    Ken
Nope the cases uses form factors, not processor-basied design.

The only thing you will worry about is if the motherboard can fit in the case. A case that has a atx form factor will fit a motherboard that has an atx form factor (and micro-atx most of the time) but not an Eatx form factor.

BTW don't forget the other hardware, like cpu cooler, ram, power supply, hard drive, optical drive, operating system, and expansion cards if needed.

Also a anti-static mat and anti-static bracelet will be good too. BTW do not use magnetic screwdrivers. (not to put in the case but to prevent ESD damage)
    NOPE! No Prob!

The case design isn't based on the processor. The case design is based on what motherboard -%26gt;Form Factor %26lt;- it will support, (Use)

ALL motherboards are based on a Form Factor.

Here, .....let me show you what I mean by Form Factor, and the various form factors there are,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherboard鈥?/a> Long page, scroll down.

The main two computer motherboard form factors are,

    1.Micro-ATX

    2.ATX

The Main form factor being used is ATX.

At almost the bottom, of the above links page, is a chart. You will see sizes listed for the various form factor's. This is based in Millimeters. You can go online, and use a Millimeter to Inches Converter, (Free) to change mm to inches, should you use inches. (I do!)

Inside the computer case is a Support Plate. This is where the mobo, (Motherboard), connects to.

On this support plate will be threaded holes. These are where the brass -%26gt;Standoff/s %26lt;- go. If it has slots, or non-threaded holes, it will use plastic Spacers.

Next to these threaded holes, or slots, (Or holes with no threads), are raised designations. (or stamped in) Matx stands for Micro-ATX.

ATX just stands for ATX, (Natch'!)

You use the appropriate holes, to match the form factor of the motherboard.

There is another thing. In the back of the computer case is an I/O Shield. This is a thin metal plate where the I/O ports go through.

I/O stands for Input/Output. Like the keyboard, mouse, monitor, game port, etc.

There should be an I/O plate in the back of the case already. It may not match the mobo you're trying to install. Most mobo's, come with an I/O shield in the box with the mobo.

You have to take the one that's in the case out. Then install the one that comes with the mobo, in the case.

The edges of this I/O Shield are SHARP! You can EASILY cut your finger, or fingers. Use care!

You can use an instrument like a flat blade screwdriver, and push hard in the middle. Some push in, some push out. Sometimes you can take the tip of the screwdriver, and work around the edge of the I/O Shield to remove it. Once you have a couple of edges going out, tap it with the screwdriver, or use pliers on one edge. You can EASILY bend the edge of the computer case, where this shield is installed!

Use finesse, and don't get hurt!

(Make sure ALL the standoffs, line up with the mounting holes in the mobo. If just ONE standoff is in the wrong place, (Doesn't line up with a hole),it can short the mobo out! It can touch an exposed solder joint on the bottom of the mobo.

If the mobo comes with fiber washers that go around the mounting holes, use 'em! Read what the Motherboard Manual says about this first! It may say yes, it may say no.

Rule of Thumb is to use fiber washers, if the mounting holes have no metal ring around them. Metal ring? Usually not used.

They go under the screw head)

Use the CD that comes with the mobo, FIRST! Then put the Operating System on.

Standoffs are almost always hexhead screws. Just use a pair of pliers and unscrew them. Only on one occasion did I ever see standoffs that were actually riveted to the motherboard tray.

Is there a way to know the Electrical Power consumed by a Power Supply without opening the Computer Case?

    Dear all,

First of all, good afternoon. Secondly, I would like to know if there is a way to identify the electrical power consumed by a power supply without having to open the computer case. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Bye!! :)Is there a way to know the Electrical Power consumed by a Power Supply without opening the Computer Case?
You can measure how much electricity your computer is drawing from the AC wall outlet by using a Kill-A-Watt meter: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url鈥?/a>

No cable cutting necessary. Plug the Kill-a-watt meter into your wall outlet, plug your PC into the Kill-a-watt meter. Done.Is there a way to know the Electrical Power consumed by a Power Supply without opening the Computer Case?
use a multimeter to measure amps being pulled by the power supply. The problem is that the measurement requires the meter be in series which mean you will have to cut AC cords hot and shunt it with meter. You can also use an ammeter that employs an inductance loop but again the AC cords outer insulation must be stripped and the induction loop must be place around the hot. After obtaining the amp being pulled, the wattage of the supply will be the product of the current (amps) and the voltage (volts) i.e. Power (watts) = I (amps) * E (volts) or if you find this method inconvenient or beyond your ability buy a commercially available metering device. Here is the URL of a company I have dealt with - %26gt; http://www.powermeterstore.com/index.php鈥?/a>
there are some devices you can buy that will tell you exactly how much power something is consuming. Basically plug the cable into this device and this device plugs in the power outlet.

Does anyone know the amp rating on the 12v system for a PA806 computer case with power supply.?

The only thing that I know is the the power supply is rated at 500watts. I need to know what the amperage is to determine what video cards I can put in my computer.Does anyone know the amp rating on the 12v system for a PA806 computer case with power supply.?
It is most likely similar to this:

    Linkworld LPK2-30-P4 500W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    rated for +12v@20A http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggImage/p鈥?/a>

most case-bundled units are mis-labeled and rated with max/peak wattage/current values that are misleading, it may not hold that 20A value for over a split-second before it shuts down or worse, causes the unit to fail. I would not put a load of over 60% on units of this type since it may put the hardware at risk.

Before you consider an upgrade, consider a reliable power supply such as this one

    SeaSonic SS-300ES 300W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

    +12v@288w/24A http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggImage/p鈥?/a>

At least with this unit you know your limits, and is more capable than the generic 500w since it is both properly rated and made by a known reliable brand.

    cheers

As with every one else says, no you dont need a new case.. Just make sure it is the right supply you need... Most power supplys are the same, only few are bigger or smaller and some range a bit on the setup on the back, but all in all most are the same...Just make sure your wire setup on the bord ATX power connector is the same sometimes the retail powersupplies are not very well ';quality controlled'; and you get a few that are backwards.

if you just want to change the power supply from 250w to 450w, you don't have to change the case, if you don't want it. just buy the power suppply.
You might need a new case if you have a slimline PC. Check with your computer manufacturer to make sure you get the right specifications for the power supply. Also make sure that one is the right size. Like I said before, your computer manufacture can provide you with a larger power supply that will fit in your case.
as far as I know (be warned I maybe wrong as it has happened before, although it happened on a wednesday) anyways... all power supplies are generic in size I doubt you'll have to buy a new computer case....

    http://4einc.info
no. you dont have to. just buy a new smps (power pack) for your cabinet
    Absolutely not!

Just ensure that the power supply that you buy is the same interface as the one you're currently using. Just look up your computer's operation manual, and you should see something near the power supply manual such as ';ATX';, or ';Mini-ATX';. You want to buy the corresponding type. It's most-likely to be ATX, though.

... if you're building a computer you'll need a lot more than just a motherboard.

Computer cases are just the shell... they don't actually do anything.

They have case fans for cooling, but other than that they don't do anything but protect the hardware.

    You'll need the following:

    * A processor

    * A power supply

    * A CPU fan

    * A hard drive

    * A disk drive

    * Some RAM

    * A video card (if the motherboard has integrated video you won't need a video card unless you want to play games... then you'll need a video card as integrated video cards a very poor at rendering games).

    * Thermal paste for when you install the CPU fan

If you're just buying a new computer case and installing old hardware in it, then you'll only need the computer case.

    Gaming computer cases?

i use the antec 1200 very very nice case with stacks of fans!! but it is very big. If i was only using 1 video card i would have gone with a 900 besides that it's a great case lots of room to work around in an good for cable managment! Gaming computer cases?
The cooler masters truly are cool. Heat is a major issue when building a computer. I have a Cooler master and my case never gets hot even during intense summer. Make sure the form factor is ATX - this is the most commonly used and will fit your motherboard most likely (unless stated otherwise). If your motherboard is BTX form factor, get a BTX case; but this is unlikely.
Do a 'google' search on all three cases. Write down the highlights. Compare them. Check reviews on the 'net. Compare prices. What may be the 'Shizzle' for one user, may not be the 'Shizzle' for you!
I have always liked Lian Li cases...as well as CoolerMaster. Of course, my all-time favorites are Shuttle SFF. LOL

Can You Switch a Mother Board to a different Computer Case?

i want to buy a case from new egg, and have someone put my mother board in it from a different computer. are all mother boards and cases compatible? id be sweet for help. thanksCan You Switch a Mother Board to a different Computer Case?
Most motherboards are ATX form factor, and so are most cases. To be sure you should have somebody take a look at your motherboard just to make sure the form factor is standard. Can You Switch a Mother Board to a different Computer Case?
Depending on the Form Factor of your motherboard, if it is the same, then yes.

How do you safely clean dust from inside the computer case?

    Hi There%26gt;

All answers state to get a can of compressed air.

One answer states to block the fans from turning, ex. with

a pencil- this is to prevent overstressing the bearings,

and to prevent ';creating'; electricity within the motor windings,

since, if you ';turn'; a motor, it becomes a generator.

One answer states NOT to vaccuum anywhere near a computer,

which is generally good advice, since, most vaccuum cleaners

prduce HUGE amounts of static electricity, which causes sparks

of high voltage electricity, easily 1/4 inch long. Hitting a keyboard

or mouse etc. will cause the spark to follow the cord INTO the

computer, and can travel across the entire motherboard,

silently blowing up a dozen chips on its way.

The other aspect of this is that ';sucking'; air, as in a vaccuum cleaner, is only efective in a very short range, while a blowing

blast of air can be felt a foot away.

One answer states that after blowing loose dust, use a 1 inch

brush to loosen any other dust, and clean again-- good advice.

Somone stated taking the case off - good advice.

I also take the case off the power supply, blow air, brush, sometimes use a damp cloth if the dust wont blow off, and use

a pencil or screwdriver to stop the fans from turning.

BUT, I gave up on canned air a long time ago, and use the exhaust port on a Shop Vaccuum, with a crevice tool, and

blow extremely high velocity air around the case. It is 10 times faster, more powerful, and since I already have a Shop Vac,

it is always available. If you are only doing one computer, once,

in a few years, the canned air is ok ( A bit whimpy, but ok ). If you

are doing a lot of computers, frequently, then the canned air

method is unnacceptable. The danger in using an ordinary vaccum is the static electricity, usaually generated by the plastic

hose generating electricity as it RUBS across carpeting and surfaces. If you take the hose out of the vaccuum port, and put it on the exhaust port ( many newer, cheaper, shop vacs do not have an exhaust hose port, and put the motor itself in the exhaust to cool the motor, and ';diffuse'; the escaping air ), and do not brush the crevice tool over carpeting, you generate very little electrical current. If you GROUND the tip by touching to the outer case when you start, you get rid of any momentary charge, and

After blowing it out I take a one inch paintbrush %26amp; brush loose any remaining dirt then blow it out again.

You can get the cans of air at anyplace that sells computer stuff.
Buy a can of compressed air (electronics dept. at Walmart or most department stores or a computer store), unplug your computer, remove the casing with a screw driver. Following the instructions on the can, remove dust from CPU fan, Power Supply Fan and other surfaces.
Go to any type computer store or warehouse club and get some ';canned air';. This is compressed air in a can with a plastic straw. Use this to blow the dust out of your computer.

Do you want to have fans blowing in or out of your computer case?

I have an HP pavilion computer. I bought a sapphire radeon hd 4850 for it and i want to put an extra fan in my computer because I want to keep the card running cool. Do I put the fan in so it will suck hot air out or make it blow cool air inDo you want to have fans blowing in or out of your computer case?
    Out.

That way it pulls cooler room air (through the vents...keep them clean!) across the components that get hot...Do you want to have fans blowing in or out of your computer case?
Let it suck the hot air out :-)
You want a combination of both, to create a current. For example, my case has one on the top blowing down, one in the back and one on the side blowing out to move the heat out. If you have two fans blowing out, your not getting fresh air into the case to transfer heat out , if you have two blowing in, the heat won't move at all.
you want positive air flow in your case....in order to achieve that you need fans pulling air in and fans exhausting air out.....

you say you want to put a extra fan in but you don't say where....if its in the front you want the fan to be pulling air in.....i assume the case has a rear exhaust fan already and that will be pulling hot air out....if the fan you bought is going on the side panel you want the fan pulling cool air in to give the video card some extra air, that also cools the motherboard better somewhat to,like the north bridge and the ram plus the cpu fan will draw some of that air in also........if you are gonna put the fan at the top of the case you want that to exhaust air out also.....

so the typical fan arrangement for keeping a case cool with positive air flow would be like this.....this is my set up.......

2--120mm fans in the front bezel pulling air in, 1--120mm fan for the rear exhaust pulling air out,1--120mm side panel fan pulling cool air in and 1 140mm top fan exhausting air out the top of the case....i also has a xigmatek s1283 cpu cooler with a scythe 120mm fan blowing air through the heatsink and out the top exhaust fan....you can run it out the back but i found sending it out the top of the case works a lot better.....keeps my overclocked phenom II x4 955@3.82ghz nice and cool at 32c idle and 46c underload gaming......and my 4870 runs a 48c idle and 64c underload gaming.....

I realize you cant put that many fans in a prebuilt but that's the type of air flow you want....all fans are 120mm antec tri cool fans that push a lot of air.........

    Hi There%26gt;

If you GROUND the tip by touching to the outer case when you start, you get rid of any momentary charge, and

if you keep the nozzel touching the outer case as much as possible, you also ground any momentary charges. Since using a shop vac is 10 times more powerful than a teeny can of air, you

are only blowing air for seconds, and doing a better job. Since I have many computers, I would not consider a ';can'; of air, with the teeny little red plastic nozzel, unless there were no alternatives. The warning to NEVER use a vaccuum any where near a computer, refers to people vaccuuming a room, with the

computer on a rug, and taking the highly charged vaccum end and putting it on the keyboard, mouse, printer, cables, etc. -- which can, and will ,blow up the computer's chips !!! Sometimes

being a neat freek, does not pay...

Is your floor carpeted? If so you are creating a static potential, and yes it can harm your computer totally if it goes into the actual electronics. If you have carpet, try to get a plastic square section (they sell them at like staples of office depot so that you can roll your chair on it instead of a rug). Why does my computer case shock me when my feet are on the floor?

The LED is probably built into the power switch. See if you can find any company name or part number on the switch. Do a web search with the information and see what you can find.

It may be easier to replace the case.

Where can I buy the cables that attach to the power/reset buttons on a computer case and the motherboard?

I am building a NES PC and I have most of the parts but since I am building the computer into a NES and not a regular computer case I don't have the cables that are attached to the power/reset buttons and have a two pin female connector that you plug into the motherboard. I am using a Jetway Mini-ITX motherboard if that matters.Where can I buy the cables that attach to the power/reset buttons on a computer case and the motherboard?
To get a good setup going you're most likely going to have to trim and attach wires of your own. You'll need to make one end attached to a regular connector that connects to the LED interface on your motherboard. The other end will have to be attached to whatever switches the electrical current on and off.

There really isn't an easy fix for this. It would help if you look up a tutorial on building PC cases, since you're basically doing that. Good luck on your project!

Why are some people racist against black or white people, but not against black or white computer cases?

I myself have a beige computer case, but that does not mean I have more processing power than my fellow Black computers. Processing power depends on the processor, which are all silver-colored. Some even think that beige or white looks less modern than black, but there aren't any computer-case slurs.

On the second one there are comments about it getting dusty and such. This is because of the way it is almost completely see through. You wouldn't like that, I don't think. It's not really very tasteful in my opinion.Computer cases -which do you prefer? (video)?

Why do you even want any of these? If your computer works fine as is there is no reason to get a new power supply, and upgrading your processor from 2.6 to 3.2GHz in the same model is a waste of money when you could just overclock it.Should I get a new processor or a new computer case with 500W power supply?

What about a new graphics card?

The processor sounds fine as it is IMO.

The case/PSU doesn't sound as bad.
What kind of power supply are you running now (300W/400W)? That would be a good starting point. Are you running one video card or two. These are factors to consider when figuring out what size power supply you need. Is it a name brand ps or one that came with a case. I am wary of the ones that come with the case because they are usually very cheap. I will usually buy a empty case and then buy a separate ps like a Thermalake or Antec.

Bigger is not allways better when it comes to air movement. You are best off to go with 120mm pulling out the front and pushing through the back.

When you have many different directions the air is moving you'll get air pockets where the air will just get hotter and hotter, kind of like off the tips of a planes wingtips, it will be dead space.

i would like dip in pure alcohol or something eg. washing powder (basically soak it) in anything. also i have things from family that smoke and the best way is to leave it adjust to your own smell.Cleaning Old Computer Case: How to remove cigarette smell?
With smokers in my house the best thing I have found to get rid of the smell is vinegar, that is slightly watered down, and to let it air out outside. Very few things I have had to repeat it on, but there are times when I did.
get a heavy duty trash back and a gallon of cheap pinesol and fill the trash bag up with that and water just until it covers the case, tie it up outside and let it set for a few hours then spray it off with a water hose.
idk like febreeze that case lol...i dunno leave out on ur door step or in the back on deck or sumthing one night and see if the works, just let it air out.

Do I need to purchase an aftermarket cooler for my computer case if there are already two in the computer?

My computer case has two fans in it already, I plan to overclock my processor, should I buy a cpu heatsink/fan?Do I need to purchase an aftermarket cooler for my computer case if there are already two in the computer?
yes, if you are trying to oveclock, you need a better cooling system than just your stock hsf.Do I need to purchase an aftermarket cooler for my computer case if there are already two in the computer?
defiantly buy a cooling fan thats better then stock Zalmans are sweet i bought a ninja from scythe it is massive and it cools very well now you can look into liquid cooling if you want more o/c power and if moneys no object look into mega cooling with a vapo-chill it cost about 900 +/- but will cool your cpu (o/c a 3.4 ghz to over 5 ghz)

Can liquid cooling be used with any computer case?

i have some case from antec i think the model p160w or something anyways. Would liquid cooling work with any case or does it have to be a special case? thanks! Can liquid cooling be used with any computer case?
Well usually you need holes in you case for the tubes to lead to and from the radiator. You can drill two holes into your case where you want the hoses to go and place rubber washes around the hole so you won't dig into the tube. Can liquid cooling be used with any computer case?
Yes i have heard that liquid cooling need special casing. And it should. I have seen lots of normal casing and none of them designed to support a liquid cooling system (No holes).

But liquid cooling is dangerous. If the liquid is somehow spilled it could short the circuitry of your PC. Its not very popular.
it'll work with any case. All you need is the water block that sits on your cpu/vid card and the tubes connecting it. The rest can all be outside the computer. Although the reservoir can be in a 3.5'; bay, which I suggest because its easy and you can get ones for it that look really cool (reservoirs can also be mounted in other places in the case). Then u've got ur pump and radiator which u can mount inside your case, though I dont suggest that. They create excess heat, which raises ur case temp, and then you need noisy fans, which kinda defeats some of the point of water-cooling.

Go to Xoxide.com and click on one of the water-cooling kits to see how people have assembled their kits. There are some ways that dont put many components in the computer, but don't look thrown together.

You will be able to download a PDF that tells you exactly what you need to do in order to upgrade RAM or other hardware. With line-drawings, usually. They have fairly detailed instructions.
yes there is a trick... first u have to get the external ';shell'; off. then there is a little lever at the top of the cpu, with like a yellow arrow pointing at it.. there will probably be a screw in it.. take it out.. then push down, and twards the back of the cpu, and pull on the front panel twards you, and the cpu should slide out, giving you access to everything

  • Where does the fans that are on the computer case plug into?

I am building a computer and am trying to figure out where the fans that came built into the case plug into. It has a plug that fits onto the motherboard, but there is an adapter that is pluged into that that looks like it would plug into the power supply. I have an Asus 95B motherboard and a Cooler Master Centurion 5 case. The motherboard manual seems to say the fans plug into the motherboard, with no plug into the power. Is this the case? Do the fans only plug into the motherboard?Where does the fans that are on the computer case plug into?
Heatsink fans are normally connected to the motherboard. Extra fans are either connected to the motherboard or to the power supply but you must get it right because of varying voltages.

wdwWhere does the fans that are on the computer case plug into?
This is one of those ';it depends'; questions. Sometimes case fans plug right into the power supply. Other times, especially small fans, might plug into the motherboard. Really, the only thing you should worry about is will it post. As long as you have the CPU fan plugged into the mother board you should be good.
You may plug the fans in to either the motherboard or straight into the power supply. The benefits of the motherboard would be if your motherboard monitors fan speeds and / or controls fan speed depending on case temperature. The bad side is that it's never good to draw too much power from the motherboard this way. Chances are you will be just fine, but there isn't much benefit to doing it this way unless you plan on using your motherboard to control fan speed (BIOS settings) or if you don't have an adapter for the power supply (which you do). Hope this helps! And again, you only need one or the other...not both!
wich fan is it? if it is one of the actuall case fans they should be connected to the power link (the 4 pin power supply plugs)...althoug if you are on about the cpu fan (the one that is directly on top of the cpu, this IS connected directly to the motherboard and that is it, it will look similar to the other power suply wires apart from it will only have 2-3 wires(i think black red and yellow) and one plug at the end of it (wearas the other wires usuall have 4 wires)...the socket for the cpu fan should be near the cpu and shoudnt be too hard to find
depends on the connector type attached to the fan itself. If it is a molex connector (ie. it has a rectangular shaped plastic end with 4 male connector pins and angled corners on two of the four corners) you will want to plug it into the female molex counterpart that comes from your power supply (ie. 4 female pin holes where the 4 male pins will fit together). If the fan has a small plastic clip with 3 tiny pinholes in it, this is a connector that attaches to the motherboard. Plug it in where the board connector says ';Sys_fan';.

    Good luck!
    power supply

keep them away from the motherboard
There are some small (3/8';) plugs that plug into the mobo, the mobo will have letters like fan1,fan2,fanpwr, ect. then there are the plugs that connect to the power supply itself. some fans have both types, when it does plug both types in. the larger connectors are color coded black, red, yellow. those connect to the power supply and sometimes you can stack theconnectors

The Antec 1200 is also quite good -- is an improvement from the Antec 300, has a massive fan, tool-less installation and side window to show off your computer's innards.
There are some great full tower cases out there. Antec Twelve Hundred, Coolermaster Cosmos 1000s is really good because it gives you lots of room, good cooling and it has sound dampening . Antec p193 is also a large case that is really good!

Because it's a pain in the butt to have to dust off the components every month...What can I do to keep dust from entering my computer case?
the one thing you can do is install fan filters. while it wont fully eliminate all the dust, it will reduce it. i have filters on all my fans except for my top exhaust which doesnt really need it anyways. What can I do to keep dust from entering my computer case?
Use your computer in a 'Clean Room'. The kind that harddrives are built in, and Nasa uses. Have a double door with an entryway in-between them, and have many air jets that blow air on you, from head to toe as you enter the entryway. Take a shower, before you enter the entryway of the Clean Room, and don your protective suit, and head gear.

Otherwise you're stuck like the rest of us.
Well ... that is called maintenance! If you aren't willing to do that, then the dust will accumulate and you'll have real problems.

The only other alternative is to build a dust-free room.

Looks are not that important but if it look too flashy with a load of LEDs built in it would probably put me off. In reality i probably wouldn't buy a case unless it was just plain black although im not 100% against other colours. I do normally put my own LEDs in things but i just try to get a slight glow rather than light the room up.

I have 3 hard drives 2 in raid 0 and a spare. So 3 drive bays are fine for me. An a single dvd drive.

So cooling is by far the most important thing for me then looks and as i have never seen a case without enough drive bays thats last. Oh and of course price is very important too. What do computer gamers want from a computer case?
    '; I am interested in what you want from a case';

Hardcore gamers would want the best cooling possible at the lowest possible noise. Make space for a liquid cooling system or for big, low-rpm fans. Notice that designs like the Mac Pro and the HP Voodoo Blackbird 002 are raised so that there is at least one more vector for ventilation.

Mac Pros (and their predecessors the PowerMacs) had a hinged door to allow for easy motherboard and drive bay management.

Of course, the case should conform to at least the ATX motherboard-size standard.

    ';how many drive bays you need?';

Standard cases come with at least 4 bays. That's enough even for hardcore gamers. The most gamer-friendly (speed over HD space) RAID settings require at least 3-4 HDs.

As for optical drive bays (DVD, Blu-Ray) most wouldn't go past 2 bays.

    ';how important is looks over cooling?';

If looks will compromise cooling, then it is not for the hardcore. A good-looking case design sells fast to the uninformed game addict, though. Again refer to the Mac Pro and the Blackbird for lessons on form that's synergistic with function.
1st, LED LIGHTS! :D obviously with a fan controller and LED light controller..to turn off the LED lights when u dont want it on P

2nd, Removable Mobo tray...this would be really convenient for many people

    3rd, good cooling [obviously]

    4th, a really nice looking case [elegent/cool]

5th, It's nice to have an all black interior

6th, Mid tower - full tower

7th, USB ports and stuff like that on the front

    8th, A mobo heatsink backplate hole :D

9th, would be nice to be tooless
Looks are just shy of irrelevant, as long at it's not butt ugly it will do, if I want it to look cool I will build it myself. Just give me room for at least two hard drives, at least two dvd bays and enough clearance to fit a big heat sink. I swap parts out often, so ease of opening is important, too.
cooling is one of the most important factors for hardcore gamers, a lot of gamers like to show off their computer case i want you to go to the http://www.cpu magazine.com website and look at some of the pc mods that people came up with from the past to the present ,give you some good ideas

cheersWhat uv light do i need to make my computer case glow ?
My friend's computer has a few LEDs on the inside and some slits cut into the box so it glows. They're bright, so you'd just need a couple.

What is the most expensive computer case?

it can be made out of gold silver diamonds. it just has to be freakind expensive. the computer case can be any form factor. What is the most expensive computer case?
I think at the most you're looking at about $300-$400. People usually don't build computer cases with rare gems or metals that are especially heavy, like gold. What makes them expensive is functional value, like cooling systems. (example: http://www.pctoys.com/840556029083.html )What is the most expensive computer case?
Actually, you should look up the company PC Zeus. They have two cases that are ridiculously expensive. Their Jupiter case runs approximately $900,000 and is solid platinum encrusted with diamonds. Their Mars case runs around $650,000 and is solid gold, still encrusted with diamonds.

Hi, the most expensive computer case I've ever seen is the Coolermaster 830 Blue Flame Smooth Creation Special Edition Case. This case doesnt have diamonds or anything but it does have one cool case, the flames change colour as the psu's temperature increase. This case is around 拢700, which is probably the most expensive out there! minus cases with diamonds in them like you sayd. Im sure a solid cold case with every inch laced with diamonds would come into the millions mark!

    Hope this helped, Kieran

How can you tell which form factor a computer case is from the outside? ATX or BTX?

What is they physical differences between ATX and BTX cases from looking at it from the outside? How can you tell which form factor a computer case is from the outside? ATX or BTX?
I'm not sure you can tell just by looking at the outside. If it's a Dell or Gateway it's probably a BTX.

How can i open an old Dell Optiplex computer case?

I found an old Dell Optiplex computer tower that lays horizontally and the monitor sits on top of, but it doesnt have any screws to remove so that I can open it up and add a new hard drive. The lid wont come off and I was wondering if anyone knew how to open it.How can i open an old Dell Optiplex computer case?
The chassis is tool-less, you need to press buttons on both the top and the underside of the case to open it.

    Hope this helps.

Good Luck. How can i open an old Dell Optiplex computer case?
On the back of the computer there should be a spot where a padlock would go. Slide it so that the holes do not line up. This unlocks the case. There should be an additional button on the front. When you push it the sides/top should come off.

I had a fight with one of those not to long ago myself.

If all else fails you could always use a sledge hammer or run it over with your car. :-)
