Is there anything wrong with leaving my computer case open and point a normal household fan at it?

To keep it cool. I heard fast tempature fluctuation, dramatic hot to cold can be very damaging to your computer. Is there anything wrong with leaving my computer case open and point a normal household fan at it?
It's fine. I've seen that many times. Nothing bad happened, except dust.Is there anything wrong with leaving my computer case open and point a normal household fan at it?
Nope, No problemo.
nothing on temperature wise. i can actually recommend it on a very hot day. however leaving it in this state for prolonged period of time exposes your internal parts to a lot of dust and dirt.
I leave my computer case open, but I have heard that some electrical interference may also cause problems. Not sure about the temperature fluctuations, but maybe someone else could provide better insight to that point.
Dust is a huge issue even with a case kept closed. If you wish to continue doing this I highly reccomend you buy cans of concentrated airspray. Spray with the air on a daily basis.

The best solution would be to purchase the proper CPU fans and install them. If you are playing CPU intensive games, or using CAD programs, you do need to keep your system very cool.

Also, keep your computer tower out in the open, rather than storing in a computer cupboard. The small space can cause the system to overheat. Again, fans are by far the best option, and many use four or five fans to cool their machine, especially those who play a lot of CPU intensive games.

Why would your system be subjected to dramatic hot/cold fluctuation? If it is indoors, simply keep the house at an average temperature. Unless you use it outdoors for some odd reason.
There isn't anything wrong with this procedure, but it would be better to install the proper cpu and case fans. An external fan does little to cool the cpu.
A properly cooled case is better. However there isn't a problem with leaving it open, but it takes up the space next to your computer, wherever it is, and doesn't look as good as just a closed case computer. But it all depends on what you want to do.
done that last summer...but dusty if open 4 a long time ;-)
I leave the case open on my main PC because I am always messing around in it anyway. It sits on top of my desk and actually gets less dusty than the second PC that is closed and sits under my desk.

Best Computer Cases (For Cooling!) That I can get?

What are the best computer cases that I can possibly get for keeping my computer parts nice and cold.

I don't care about looks since most of the ones that look nice usually fall apart easily and are made from cheap materials.

I plan to get a Cosmos 1000 for its reliability but I may get something else if it works better.Best Computer Cases (For Cooling!) That I can get?
Cosmos 1000 is a bit overrated, for 149.99 you can get the CoolerMaster HAF 932 (HAF=High AirFlow)

it contains a brilliant design along with 3 230mm fans, up to 4 140mm fans, up to 3 120mm fans, mesh covering on 5.25 and expansion bays, optional second PSU, tool less drive bays, side panel window, easy Liquid Cooling setup, and best of all, maximized airflow.

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/2鈥?/a>Best Computer Cases (For Cooling!) That I can get?
Anything that keeps the air moving. More fans, and larger fans.

You want to create air currents in the case that move cold air in and move hot air out. Most cases with pre-installed fans are designed this way already. If you also want low noise, choose a case with large, speed-controlled fans. Small fans and fans that always run at full speed make more noise. Of course, running fans at full speed also increases cooling capacity.

I prefer 12-cm fans at front and back, plus a bigger fan on the top. This can keep a system very cool. I have an Antec Twelve Hundred in front of me with five 12-cm fans and a 20-cm overhead fan, and right now the processor is at 22掳 C, the disks are at 29掳 and 30掳, and the GPU is at 45掳, in a room at 22掳. It stays quite cool even under load.
Go for any of these. Antec 300,900,1200. They have great cooling and you can have up to 5 fans in them. I have the 300 with a 120mm in the front and back and a 140mm on the top amd my cpu never sees above 45C while playing crysis.
antec tweleve hundred is for serious gamers.buy it.its the best.

Is it ok to skimp on a computer case?

I mean buying cheap, generic $30 cases. I'm on a tight budget and want to spend as little as possible without sacrificing too much performance. Is there much difference between a generic brand and a slightly more expensive $60 Antec case (for instance)?

Also, most cheap ones don't come with fans. Will I need to buy some, or is it unnecessary? Is it ok to skimp on a computer case?
First off, congrats for even considering checking the component temps - it's the primary cause of premature death in all PC components.

For most basic 'net or home office PCs any case will be sufficient given todays low power requirements, I have a couple of linux servers running as file / print servers and they don't get hot at all, even at full tilt (thanks to intel's Dual Core)

However if you are gaming and / or overclocking a cheap generic case will force you to remove the side panel just to cope with the heat buildup, and more than likely have an external room fan blowing in to keep things from overheating.

So if you don't mind a getto rig with an oscillating fan as a requirement sure that will be just fine.

Personally I have built many budget game PCs and have found the cases that have free flowing vented front panels the best choice, in particular the Cooler Master Centurion 5 series and the new Antec Three Hundred for excellent price / performance.

Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-T05

$45

Antec Three Hundred

http://www.provantage.com/antec-three-hu鈥?/a>

$43

The Centurion 5 is nice - has 120mm rear exhaust and 80mm intake (also cools HDDs) and has vented side panel for 80mm fan mounts to spot cool the CPU and / or the GPU if necessary (usually not - shameless newegg link here :)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.鈥?/a>

The Three Hundred boasts a top 120mm on top and rear, as well as two 120mm mounts up front and a side vent for GPU spot cooling if necessary (getting at least a single 120mm front/bottom intake is all you need to keep cool)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.鈥?/a>

Either one you can't go wrong and not that much more $ that your cheapo cases yet so much better since you can leave the side panel on without overheating.

cheersIs it ok to skimp on a computer case?
It is a good idea to keep it cool with fans, but for general purposes and moderate gaming, you don't need a brand case. Just buy a good cheap case that fits your budget.

If you are overclocking, then an adequate cooling system, will most definitely benefit.

Overclocking will increase voltage and heat, so more fans the better.

I myself overclock my cpu, and I use an antec 900, which keeps the components in my case pretty cool. I still haven't installed the other 2 fans that came with it.

Browse and read some reviews on newegg for a good gaming case, ideal for overclocking and what not.

I also recommend the below site, it provides you with everything you need to know about overclocking, as well as any other computer related material. It is very informative and I use it all the time.

Just the raw metal case?

Utterly and completely unnecessary so long as you keep the air moving off of the components and away from the board. I have more than one machine running in here that hasn't seen the inside of a case in 6 years, but there is a big fat room fan blowing over the lot of 'em.

But since you probably don't want a mess of dangly bits, you can use any case that has mounts for your board. You DO want the fans though. You need at least three. One for the chip and heatsink. one for the power supply (comes with it) and one mounted to the vent in the back of the case, and blowing out. You need to keep the air that is coming off of the chips moving out of the machine, or the heat build up WILL fry your box. No maybe about it.

Your chip fan probably comes with the chip, if not, you need to get one. they are around $20.

A vent fan may just come with your case, if not you need to get one. Again about $20. Forty bucks to protect your machine. It is not optional.

depends what ur using ur laptop for...if its at home and not on the go then u dont need a case...and even if its being lightly used on the go...u dont really need it.

Where can I buy an on/off switch for a custom computer case?

I dunno about all that, but I bet I know someone who does. http://www.myspace.com/nanafriendpcs I hope this helps.Where can I buy an on/off switch for a custom computer case?
Alright check this out there if you are building it completly custom there is a way you can turn it on with a remote the kit is $10 and it comes with the power switch too. Here is the link:

If you want a wireless one check out this website:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Universal-IR-Remote-Power-Switch-for-PC/

If that is not what you are into just go to Google and enter purchase PC power switch and browse around.
Try local PC shop, yellow pages or local google it; they normally get parts or dismember dead machines for parts. They might be able to help you. Don't try and order anything online; 99.9% of the time it's no fit, trust me I know from keys to switches.

im thinking about cutting this metal part thats blocking the way, i know it will fit if i cut that metal part, but i dont know if i should just let geek squad fit it in there some howWhat to do if your Video Card doesnt fit the computer case?
You should ideally return the card and get a low profile version of the same card. geek Squad won't do any help if the card won't fit in the first place.

Cut the case.. thats was about computer modding is about.

Just be careful not to let any chips especially metal ones fly into the case.. that could be the end of your machine.

Yes, you could buy a low profile model.. but if you're stuck with that one, cut away. Only one who looks at the pc is you.

If you could only know half the things I bent, smashed, cut and modded to fit my pc together. Finish product looks perfect, it wasnt a pretty ride though.
Well make sure that you are putting in the good slot. If you see a metal part which has nothing to do with the functionning of the computer, I wouldnt hesitate to take it off..but its at own risk. My point of view, I dont kknow whats the metal stuff is for ..maybe its just a piece of metal..if you have no clue..how to cut the metal part of what ever..just ask some dude who knows about computers to fix it for u..

Usually if you look at the manual either physically or online it will tell you. Or better yet you can look on the sides of the motherboard, it's in little white letters if memory serves me right.

remove the cover off the case and look at the mother board if it has white card slots for pci cards then it's a ATX case, look on the motherboard around the edge and it will say atx on it as well.

I would definately go with case No. 2. With all those fans already installed, especially the one on the top, the air flow will be good enough to keep them all on low. Which wll be nice and quiet. The power supply is located on the bottom, which will keep the case from being top heavy. Which makes it less likely to get knocked over. The power buttons and front usb ports are at the top which makes them much easier to get to. There is no door on the front to get in the way or stop air flow. Plus those doors are known to break easily. Just so you know where I'm coming from, I went with the Antec 300 from Newegg and couldn't be happier.Computer Cases: I have found three that I like. Between the 3, I would go with #3, the cooling fans look cool, and will help a lot. I like Newegg, but you really should check out xoxide.com, they are great. Here is my case, http://www.xoxide.com/bluvreclca.html I have the clear power supply, with uv cable covers, looks great when lit up. Right now it's gone down, it was $30 more when I purchased it.
I never go to links posted here, because I don't know for sure where they might really lead to!

You know the LED'S on a computer case like an Antec 900 with the blue lights? How do I make them work do i have to connect it to my motherboard or something? How do you install the LED's on a computer case?
Yes, pull out the manual for your motherboard, you will need to connect the power for the led lights to specific pinouts on your motherboard for them to work properly, as you should for your cooling fans as well.

if we had your motherboard model number this would be easier, but ifyou have the manual you should be able to get this done without too much issues, the manual has picture diagrams to help.

Make sure to disconnect your ac plugin from the wall to power supply, dont want to zap yourself.

    Computer Cases question?

Is their really that big of a difference in the full tower and the mid tower and if so what should i go for a mid tower or a full tower. I plan to make my first computer and i am looking to making a great gaming machine at least something to run 7 64 bit and any game with about full spec. will it matter what case I go for or what.Computer Cases question?
The difference is just the size and space that a full tower has over a mid tower. For most builds, a mid tower will be just fine. You can find plenty of mid tower cases that have plenty of room inside for your parts. Just stick with good brand with cases; cooler master, thermaltake, antec, lian-li are all good brands. Oh, and never ever use the power supply that comes with a case. Always buy a separate power supply!Computer Cases question?
Full Towers give you more bragging rights when you haul them to a LAN party, especially if they're packed full of neon lights. There's no real difference in performance.

    Buy a case that will:

    1) Fit your motherboard

    2) Have enough HDD and CD slots

    3) Has enough fans if you're into extreme overclocking

    4) Place external USB connections where you can actually use them (USB slots on the bottom of the case are awkward if your case sits on the floor most of the time).

You can actually get a screaming core i7 with 12 GB RAM and a Radeon 5970 graphics card on a micro-ATX motherboard that will fit in the smallest of towers. Assuming you can afford the 5970 and can find it in stock.

    5) Then worry about the ';coolness'; factor
Just get a case that cools well and looks good to you. And make sure it fits your parts. The difference between full and mid-tower cases varies greatly, there are cases considered mid-tower that would probably fit inside my mid-tower (CM Storm Sniper Black)

How to test computer case lights?

Okay so im building my computer and all i need is a video card

I've got a bunch of lights modded in too and was wondering if i power up my pc without the video card will it like explode? Not literally but i mean will i be able to test my lights? How to test computer case lights?
The computer won't go past the Power On Self Test (POST), so if the lights will work with the computer complaining that there's no video card, they'll work. If you have to run a program to test the lights, I'm afraid you'll have to wait until you get a video card. (Unless there's one on the motherboard.)

Its called modding and cutting your own case to do this, and from what I understand your saying that you need an extension. This doesnt exist as of yet. Not an external one. You will need to buy a new motherboard or just get yourself a new computer. Cheers

  • How do I open the EMachines Computer Case?

I'm trying to fix my gf's PC with some upgraded memory from 512kb. When I boot it up, I get a reboot 15 min in. I went to BIOS, checked the temp and its running over 100 degrees Celsius, w/ zero RPM for system fan. I'm trying to buy a new case fan as well, but this stupid tower will not be opened. I put the screwdriver to it, but a metal bracket seems impossible to remove. She doesn't have an updated warranty. How do I open the EMachines Computer Case?
If its a older pc tower... Well good luck they are always a pain =D.

Nah what should happen is they usually have 2 screws for one of the side pannels. They are screwed in the back. After you unscrew those it should slide back then out. if not regular screws then thumb screws where you can unscrew them with your fingers like my tower has.How do I open the EMachines Computer Case?
Sounds dusty! There should be two screws to remove to pop the side off.
Hmmm, if it hasn't crashed and burned yet, try this: Some of the older Emachines have a one-piece case held on by 2 or 3 phillips head screws on the back. Unscrew them, slide the whole case toward the back of the machine, then lift up. Sometimes you really have to whack it good in a couple places to loosen it up a bit.

What is the best motherboard, computer case, cooler and power supply thats compatible with a LGA 775 socket?

I just ordered a processor with these specs.

    Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Yorkfield 3.2GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 136W Quad-Core

And I want to be ready. If it would matter, I prefer parts that speeds up gaming.

Thank you. What is the best motherboard, computer case, cooler and power supply thats compatible with a LGA 775 socket?
if you can affor something like that, then Id go with a nforce 780i, a zalman cnps 9700 cpu cooler, and an nvidia geforce GTX 280. although I would return that proc you just got and get a less expensive intel quad core (seriously, extremes are overkill, and overpriced, but you can overclock them) , because then you would be able to buy the most powerful graphics card on the planet (the GTX 280) and still have $150 left over. as for cases, you obviously sound like you need something thats going to kill a lot of heat, so I would get a thermaltake armor+ and deck it out with as many 120mm fans as you can. I would also go with a 1100 watt power supply. and get a second GTX 280 if you want to be able to shred anything that dares come your way, and add a sound card (go with an x-fi) it greatly improves the sound quality (I HATE ONBOARD SOUND, IT'S NOT MINUTE DETAILS IM TALKING ABOUT HERE, IT'S CONSTANT CRACKLES AND POPPING IM TALKING ABOUT) AND DO NOT FORGET TO USE AN ANTI-STATIC WRIST STRAP. YOU WILL MESS UP (AND MOST LIKELY DESTROY) YOUR COMPONENTS IF YOU DO NOT TAKE ANY PRECAUTIONS AGAINST STATIC. SERIOUSLY, IM NOT JUST PARROTING COMPUTING ADVICE, I DESTROYED A BRAND NEW $3000 GAMING RIG THAT WAY....What is the best motherboard, computer case, cooler and power supply thats compatible with a LGA 775 socket?
dude that takes time to come up with but try looking at newegg.com they have a lot of specifications. My money is on a board that supports 8 GB of RAM but keep in mind you will need a 64bit version of vista or XP so the OS can utilize that RAM otherwise it wont see it.

Your best bet is to learn how to build your own system. No system manufacturers out there can make you a top end gaming machine like the one you could build yourself.

Every couple of years I go out and investigate the best motherboards, then the best video cards, so forth and so on until I have a parts list where I can put together a system that will serve my gaming needs for the next couple of years.

Currently my ideal system has an ASUS motherboard with a Core 2 Duo processor and dual Crossfire ATI Video cards.

Learning about these things is not that difficult, just go talk to the people who sell the individual components.

Any of your system manufacturers would charge you around $2500 to $3000 for a system with these components. If they aren't charging you at least this much then they are saving money building it by using cheap power supplies and lower end memory modules and other unnoticeable low end components.

I can build my own top end system for between $1000 and $1500. All the information I need to integrate the various components can be found on the manufacturers websites. All after build support I need can also be obtained from these same manufacturers. In addition the individual parts come with manufacturers warranties.

Just something for you to think about.

  • What's the size of a normal I/O plate hole on an ATX computer case?

There is NOWHERE on the internet that has dimensions of computer cases!!! It's getting pretty frustrating trying to build a computer case from scratch when it seems like no one has done it before.

Sorry if it sounded like a rant, but does anyone have a clue where to get dimensions for computer cases, even just the I/O sheild plate hole and expansion slot holes would be sufficient. What's the size of a normal I/O plate hole on an ATX computer case?
This may sound really unhelpful, but if I were you I would get an old atx case from someone (maybe even a computer shop that has a junker to throw out) so I would have a solid reference point right there in front of me. If I were undertaking what you are about to do, I don't think I could trust someone else's measurements.

edit: I would even consider cutting out the backplate of another case to fit into my custom build, because if your measurements are not exactly right on, your cards might not line up and that would be devastatingWhat's the size of a normal I/O plate hole on an ATX computer case?
The I/O plates are of a standard size for atx computers. The space of the holes and etc are specific to the mother board. Do a google search for the IO shield for your motherboard.

Do I need a spiffy computer case for this processor and motherboard?

I am trying to build a computer with limited experience. I just ordered an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor (3 Ghz) and motherboard (ASUS M2N-SLI deluxe AM2) from New Egg. I plan on running some games (maybe spore) but nothing insanely hard-core. Do I need a fancy computer case to house these things? I'm looking for practicality (and frugality) over bells and whistles.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!Do I need a spiffy computer case for this processor and motherboard?
No you do not need a ';spiffy'; computer case, but i would get a decent one because it does help with cooling and air flow. I really like the Antec Sonata models because they're a decent price around $120 cnd and they nice and quiet. They also have side mounting hard drives, and easy mounting Rom drives making for easy installation and looks clean.

Search on google for some computer case reviews and pick one out for your price range and needs.

    1.st link is a review

2.nd is a picture of the hard drives side mounted.Do I need a spiffy computer case for this processor and motherboard?
You can use any case that the motherboard will fit into. Believe that is an ATX board, meaning it is a standard size that fits 99% of the cases on the market right now. What you want to consider is how many bays you want (should you decide to add more drives later), if you need front USB ports, what wattage power supply (as they often come with the case) you will need, etc. Then you can look for as fancy or as plain of a case as you want that has the feature you will need.
You don't need something fancy. You may not want something too cheap, because it'll be flimsy and/or things won't fit together quite right (e.g. screw holes out of alignment, side panel not fitting tightly, etc).

Take a look at some of the lower-end Cooler Master cases, like the Centurion 5 or Cooler Master 590 or 690. Also, maybe an Antec 300 or one of their Sonata line.

One other case-related thing: be careful about buying a cheap case that includes a power supply. With one notable exception for Antec cases that include one of their Earthwatts PSUs, most of the power supplies that come with a case are pretty low quality. And, I'm not so sure about the Earthwatts, anymore, since they changed manufacturers.
not really there isnt rly anything good about a better case unless you get hardcore. most modern cases will have enough storage for a power supply about 500-750 watts. the power supply is rly all the case is good for other than holding the guts of a pc. Any more than that is a tad unnecessary, also some cases come with built in thermometers and support for liquid cooling which unless you get an nvidia 9800gtx in sli is rly unnecessary and borderline weird
The best case out there for not that much money is the Antec 900. Quiet and keeps everything cool with all its fans. Perfect . oh and it looks good too
get a case with good air flow and the ability to put in more fans. you also want something made of steel, not plastic or aluminum. plastic parts are fine but you want the carcass made out of steel and you also need to consider the number of drive bays. newegg has some great cases at affordable prices. be prepared though, a quality case will cost at least $100 for a mid-tower and around $150 to $200 for a full tower.

Does the Cooler Master RC-690 mid tower computer case come with its own power supply?

No, it doesn't. You'll need to buy your own.

What is the best computer case for cooling on your components?

i've heard lian-li is good, and coolermaster is alllright, but I want to know which case is the best for cooling in a computer - not liquid cooling either, normal fan/air cooling. What is the best computer case for cooling on your components?
From what I have read aluminum is the best choice for keeping everything cool. I just bought a Lian Li PC 60B Plus II and it is great!! Everything stays really cool. Has a fan on top of the tower to suck the hot air out.

I would not advise just removing the side panel, you want to avoid dust building up in your components especially your fans. If your fans get clogged with dust and stop functioning then you will have yourself a nasty meltdown. Also, If you are looking into a small form factor case you need to add as many fans as your power supply can handle. Hope that helps. What is the best computer case for cooling on your components?
The Antec P180 with 5 120 mm fans use a scythe fanless cpu cooler ninja that case was designed with the ninja in mind. If you want even more airflow use a panaflo 120 X 38 mm fan
My brother has a Zalman (I think that's how you spell it) CPU fan that's HUGE and powerful, and a Super Lanboy case that keeps his computer cool and quiet for practically forever!

You can transfer anything. All you would do is open the 360 (voiding the warranty) transfer it over using some longer cables for the components and your golden. Are computer cases universal?

will computer cases work with any motherboard or power supply? Are computer cases universal?
There are different types (sizes) of motherboards. There is ATX, BTX, MiniATX, MicroATX. Some cases can fit multiple types. Check the manufacturer's website to find which types will fir a particular case.

Power supplies are basically universal height and width. They can vary slightly in length depending on the power output. Are computer cases universal?
    Kind of.

Most cases use ATX and/or micro-ATX sized motherboards, and you can swap them out with a motherboard of the same size (almost all ATX cases will also hold micro-ATX)

Small form factor computers (like the cute little ones you can get from Dell) sometimes use standard size motherboards, but are frequently custom made sizes which can't be replaced with off-the-shelf parts.
Motherboards have a ';form factor'; like ATX or mini ATX. The screw holes will have to match the case. I used an old gateway 2000 case from like 10 years ago to build a complete new computer. Just make sure the motherboard form factor is compatible with the case, YOu may have to do a little modding if things don't line up perfectly for your power supply, but it should work fine.
    Mario,

In addition to the sizes previously mentioned, there are also extended ATX cases. These are primarily for server computers. I use one for my video editing workstation.

have a 2006 Gateway DX200. Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.93GHz, 504 MB of RAM... I'm looking to buy a new Video Card or Graphics Cars and put in more RAM as well. How hard would it be to completely take everything out of the Gateway, Motherboard and all, and move it to a new computer case that looks good and runs perfectly? How hard is it to completely disassemble your stock computer and reassemble it in a new computer case?
    How long do you have?

JK Not that hard as long as you have a case the motherboard can fit in.How hard is it to completely disassemble your stock computer and reassemble it in a new computer case?
I agree with everything said above. However, the hardest things to hook up are the single plug wires for the front panel lights. such as HD activity, power on, USB, headset/mic. They are usually very small wire plugs that you have to match to the new board. But, check your new motherboard manual and label them as you take them off the old board.
You should be able to put the new hardware in the Gateway box. If the motherboard configuration matches the new case, you should be able to move everything fairly easily. But all you will gain is maybe some more bays for drives (if you buy a tower case for example) or you gain a pretty box, but the actual computer remains technically the same.

The case is nothing more than a high-tech cardboard box. Unless you get more goodies.
Sometimes stock computers like to be difficult and make it hard to upgrade. Make sure that your motherboard size it compatible with the new case (it should be). After that it's not that hard. First take off the power supply, then the PCI cards, RAM, cables, etc. You will probably need to remove the heat sink to get to some screws for the motherboard (I did anyway). Then put everything in the other case in reverse order. I would recommend buying some thermal grease for your processor since you took off the heat sink. That's just my two cents, it's cheap stuff anyway. Good luck! I build my own PC and I love it!
If you are going to be spending money, you should just get a core 2 duo. Don't spend to much upgrading an old PC.

  • Should I buy a bigger computer case or buy more case fans?

On some games(Crysis Warhead, Devil May Cry 4) the game crashes after a while. I am guessing it is because the card overheats. I currently have a microATX case. There is a wireless PCI card right against my video card( a big HD3870). So I want to know if I should go and buy a bigger case or get some more fans? Anything you guys think would keep my card cooled for more graphically intense games would be appreciated.Should I buy a bigger computer case or buy more case fans?
    Buy a bigger case.

The air needs to be able to circulate freely (for best cooling). For best cooling you should have air flow in from the front, over the heatsinks, and exit out of the back. I would also suggest looking into an aftermarket heatsink for your graphics card. Putting more fans will make your PC sound like a jet engine but won't make too big of a difference.Should I buy a bigger computer case or buy more case fans?
Bigger case would be best, also consider getting a program to up the fan speed on your video card, as mine was set to roughly 20% as default, so when i cranked it up my temperatures dropped around 5-8C

Personally recommend - Antec Nine Hundred
I'm not a brand guy, but get a case that holds at least 3-5 fans. You want to keep that sucker as cool as you can. You can always add decals or pick a design and have a auto body shop do a custom paint job.
Go to Antec.com I personally have the P-180 which has awsome features. Now there is the P-190 just check it out. The cases are really nice and good pricing for the quality!!! LOOKS AREN';T WHAT MAKE THE QUALITY, TRUST THAT!

anything with an ATX form factor will work...

Just make sure that it says it will support ATX motherboards and not MICRO ATX, etc. (Although a Micro ATX motherboard will fit into an ATX case because its the bigger of the cases)

How do I know which computer case to get for my motherboard?

This is my first time building a computer. I'm buying the products from Newegg.com. How can I figure out what motherboard to get for my case. Is there a way to see what case goes with what motherboard? How do I know which computer case to get for my motherboard?
all atx motherboards will fit in atx cases, micro-atx will fit in a micro-atx or an atx case, and a btx will fit in a btx case

the motherboard should come with a custom ';port plate,'; so don't worry if the plate that comes with the case doesn't fit your motherboard. How do I know which computer case to get for my motherboard?
well, try measuring ur motherboard, then match it up with the cases dimensions (should be in the specifcations)
The motherboard will have it's ';Form Factor'; listed in the product specifications.

This would be either ATX, Micro-ATX or BTX (which is fairly rare).

Just match that up with the case you plan on buying and you are good to go.

Most cases you are going to find on Newegg are listed by form factor anyhow.
All cases are modified with different sizes to fit any motherboard. The platform where the motherboard is attached to has different sets of holes that are specially designed for any type of motherboard. But to be sure, just measure the distance of each screw on the motherboard and compare it with the casing. If the distance match then it is the ideal case. Even without measuring the case must fit all motherboards. It is a standard where the sizes of the casing's platofrms should always match the motherboard.
Most of the time case and motherboards sizes are standard, so you need not to worry about the case that fits your motherboard

  • How do I change a computer case?

I bought a new clear computer case. How would I transfer all of the parts into it. Are there any websites that give steps? Anything I need before I start? Thanks! How do I change a computer case?
An anti-static wrist strap is useful as the components are static sensitive.

Remove all the hardware from the old case carefully. You will not need to remove the CPU or memory from the motherboard.

Make sure the motherboard standoffs in your new case relate to the screw holes on the board and that none are under it obstructing the fitting (or causing a short!)

Wire up your PC switch, power LED's as laid out on the motherboard.

As it is a clear case,it might be worth investing in an aerosol air duster (Maplins) to clean off all the parts. A light brush will remove the stubborn stuff.

Switch on the machine BEFORE putting on the side panel just to blow away any dust that may end up stuck to the clear panel.

Just a few tips that might save you some grief

My computer case shorts out my new motherboard. What can I do to prevent this?

I just bought a new motherboard and have been trying to get it up and running. The technical support guy told me to take the motherboard out of the computer case and sit it on a piece of cardboard and see if it boots. Sure enough, it does. But now what? I would like to put the motherboard back in my case. Do I need to buy a new one or is there something I can do?My computer case shorts out my new motherboard. What can I do to prevent this?
Chances are that if you look at the space between your case and your motherboard, you'll see a spot where metal contacts metal. That spot needs to go away. I'd suggest calling one of your suppliers to make sure that they can approve of the alteration before actually voiding any warantees. Good luck!My computer case shorts out my new motherboard. What can I do to prevent this?
Check your metal standoffs. If they're removeable, take off any that aren't needed. If they're permanent, you'd need to grind 'em down.
check the stand-offs make aure that they are not touching and grounding out the MB.

It's probably an ATX, most computer companies have standardized to that form factor. Tell us what system you've got and we'll tell you what's in it.

How do you clean/dust off the inside of your computer case and the hardware?

Just want to know some of the ways people do it or if they even bother at all. I have a friend who uses an air pump to blow the dust off.How do you clean/dust off the inside of your computer case and the hardware?
The compressed can of air works great. It can be found at any Wal Mart or computer store. Of course, Wal Mart will offer the best price-as far as I am concerned, air is air and no single brand would be worth any more than any other. This should be all you need to do to clean out the cobwebs and dust. How do you clean/dust off the inside of your computer case and the hardware?
A can of ';compressed air'; is commonly used.
Ouch he is pumping water in to the contacts. you should use dry air or a lint free cloth. those air pumps don't get all the water out of the atmosphere.
you can buy a small vaccum pump at cdrking which costs a little more than PHP100.00.... this one's light duty only... so take care of it...
In the past, I've taken the computer out to the garage, removed the case, and used canned air to just blow the dust out of everything. I'm careful not to invert the can, since it seems to shoot out a liquidly kind of substance. It's a good idea to keep the dust out, since it gets hot in there, and can cause damage if too much dust builds up.
    Compressed air can
A compressed air can is best.

    Who cares who dares?
Compressed air (canned or otherwise) is best, though you can use a soft brush, too.

If dust builds up, it can block output vents, or fans and cause the machine to overheat.
Normal systems are opened up, after powering down, and the fans and heat sinks are removed to a kitchen sink, rinsed out, and allowed to dry.

I apply new dielectric paste, and reinstall.

Really grungie systems from people who smoke get turned away.

Cheaper to just buy a new system, as nicotine coating is sticky and bogs down all the fan bearings.

Coating also overheats all components, and glues in the connections, cables, memory sticks.

Used to pressure wash them, but, that can lift surface mounted components when you use 1500 psi that is needed to lift off the nicotine residue...

Now, on systems that are infested with cockroaches, we fumigate, then toss out the PSU, and install roach motels, after a good rinse to clean out all the droppings and feces.

How do you fix a noisy computer case fan?

Without replacing it. Can I squirt some WD40 in it?How do you fix a noisy computer case fan?
If you want to oil fan bearings check here:

    http://www.dansdata.com/fanmaint.htm

The site says NOT to use WD40 because it isn't a good lubricant.

Otherwise, there is probably some dust and debris rubbing up against the fan as it spins and is creating excess noise. The fan might have just been noisy from the beginning and not designed for quietness. How do you fix a noisy computer case fan?
have a look inside the tower its probably full of crap and dust etc like mine was
case might be lose , check if any parts are lose ..... I would not spray WD40 ...
No, you are liable to create a bigger problem than what you had! Live with it or replace it! You might clean the crud off of it to help balance it out.
If you take the casing off, it can be that the fan is probably loose and needs to be tightend. It's probably wobbling on the motor and hitting an internal part. If it is squeaking, use 3-1 oil at the base of the motor. A couple of drops will do.
first off, make sure you SHUT YOUR MACHINE OFF FIRST!!!

if you really want to spray WD-40, make sure you shoot a very little amount inside of the fan motor, and spin the fan with your fingers quite a bit to make sure it runs freely... after that, make sure the fan is clean, believe it or not, a dirty fan is a noisy fan.

    good luck.

What happens if you touch a fan in a computer case when it is on?

will it reduce the life or will it do nothing? What happens if you touch a fan in a computer case when it is on?
Yes it will reduce the life of the fan because it puts an unneeded amount of load on the fan. It shouldn't decrease that significantly unless you are doing it on a regular basis, but then again it hurts when you do so i suggest not doing it anyway. lolWhat happens if you touch a fan in a computer case when it is on?
i have touched fans by accident......it wont reduce the life span of the fan........you might break some blades and thats about it.....if that happens then yes, replace the fan....but by just touching one there will be know drastic overall effect on the life span of the fan.....

    Scott
All it will do is stop.

The lifespan of a fan is not dependent upon the electronics driving it, it is dependent upon the lifespan of the bearing system that it has similar to a pair of rollerblade wheels.
if you touch the fan of the pc when it's on, it might cause a risk of freeze the pc
You will hurt your finger or even break the nail.

Can some one please tell me how to make this happen or what programs to use.How to make the led lights from a computer case flash to the beat of a song using some kind of softwere.?
Can't be done easily. How to make the led lights from a computer case flash to the beat of a song using some kind of softwere.?
You can't make the fan light flash because there's no wire connected to it (it's spinning and powered inductively). Most of the front LEDs are hard-wired to specific circuits on the motherboard and can't be made to flash either. You'll have to add your own display with its own LEDs to do this.
Software alone will not control your lighting. They are powered at a constant voltage and would require a controller of some sort to trigger the change in voltage necessary to flash on and off. You will need a hardware solution as well as a software program to drive it. I can't recommend any products, but it sounds expensive unless you are an EE.

Take your pick. Look for one that has high CFM and low DB. If the fan pulls more than 3 watts either run it off a controller or a 4pin PSU connector to keep from frying the motherboard fan header.
Silverston FM121, they move the most air at the lowest speed. You have to use the fan controller though. If not they run full on and are loud.

  • Can you fit a modern motherboard (along with the appropriate modern components) into an old computer case?

I have a rather ancient computer from the mid 90s that doesn't work. I was wondering if you could completely change its insides, so that it only LOOKS like a piece of crap but can perform just as well as today's computers. Can you fit a modern motherboard (along with the appropriate modern components) into an old computer case?
Yes u can.Can you fit a modern motherboard (along with the appropriate modern components) into an old computer case?
Technically, it should be able to fit in. The only problem, is that the power switch on modern motherboards is actually a button that flips an electronic switch, rather than a physical switch you flip, and old computers use a physical switch. This means that even replacing the power supply unit would be a problem. One possible solution, might be to connect the reset switch to the power connection on the MOBO, but I don't know for sure if that can work.
If it is an AT style case then no, you can't put any modern parts in it. If it is a newer old computer that uses the ATX for factor, then yes you can. It mainly depends on the size of board that you want, meaning if it is a big tower, then you can put any ATX board in it. If it is a mid-size tower, you can only put a micro-ATX in it. But, as long as it is a standard ATX type board it will work perfectly.
Depends on the motherboard and the case. They make both in all sizes and shapes. The biggest problem I've had with switching motherboards into a different case (even a fairly new one) is hooking up the on-off switch and indicator lights. Every mobo seems to use a different style of connector.
even if it can fit in there, you most likely will not be able to mount the mobo to it. get your old tower, measure it, and tell the dude at the pc will this mobo fit in my tower. but even then these new mobos require specific towers cuz they got holes in specific spots where you screw them into the tower. the tower needs to have the same hole alignment. not every mobo fits into every tower even if the mobo itself can physically fit into the tower. get it?
You should be able to if the case follows the standard ATX form factor that's been around for ages. However, older cases tend to be more cramped and aren't quite designed for newer hardware so you might have issues or at the very least be lacking in some features. A descent steel case only costs about $50 anyway so it's definitely worth looking into a new case.
if the case is an ATX case, then it should be very straight forward, but if its one of those manufacturer specific designs from that era, then you are better off getting a modern case
as long as the measurements fit then yes. any case will do.

Is it possible to determine the form factor without opening a computer case?

I am trying to answer this question for my IT class. atx vs btx form factors. can you tell the diff between them without opening the pc?Is it possible to determine the form factor without opening a computer case?
I assume you are referring to the motherboard, and not the power supply or case. To put it simply, BTX motherboards are very similar in dimensions but they would look 'mirrored'. Meaning everything is pretty much flip flopped. So if you looked to where you'd normally see your IO ports, for example on a standing PC case you'd find them in the upper portion, if they were on the lower portion, that would be a good sign of this being a BTX setup. So all you'd have to do was look on the back. Of course if this case has a way to see inside as plenty of cases do, the logic wouldn't be very different as the setup looks very different to a person who is commonly building computers, which I am sure several of your students may recognize. Is it possible to determine the form factor without opening a computer case?
ATX and BTX are very similar. By looking on the back of a BTX case, all the PCI slot are on top and the I/O connection are on the bottom. So the power supply will be on the bottom. ATX is normally use by all home built computer. Both ATX and BTX are interchangeable in part beside the motherboard. Both use the same Power Supply, wiring, drives, etc.. I look at BTX as a reverse/opposite of ATX. BTX look like everything is flip around when comparing to an ATX case.
Yes - BTX boards have the I/O connectors and PCI slots in reverse order from ATX. Looking at an ATX board from the rear, the I/O ports (USB, video, keyboard/mouse/etc.) are on the left, with a BTX they're on the right.

    Hope that helps,

Then, along the edges of the case, in the rear, on the left (when viewed from front) look for 2-4 screws, not the ones going into components, but the ones holding the back of the case, to the frame. They may be thumb screws, which require no tools, or may be standard phillips screws, which require just a simple phillips screwdriver.

Remove the screws, and then, using the indent in the case, on the left hand side (when viewing the front of the case) pull the panel towards the rear, until it comes off.

What are the basic principles of computer case design?

I want to have a go at building a new computer case for my ATX form factor computer. it's a custom built computer currently in a tower case i want to change it. The main reason is to make it quieter but how can i do this without compromising the heat dissipation? i have a 150mm (thats how far apart the screws are set in opposite corners) fan on the back and a big heat sink and fan on the Pentium 4 Prescott processor.

What materials should i avoid and do you have any recommendations for possible alternative materials. Preferably i would like to make it really interesting, if you have any reference pictures of other mods people have done that would be cool.

Has anyone have any harsh lessons from experience of what i should avoid doing?

Also from what i can tell the main cause of the noise coming from my case is the rush of air, the actual case itself has very little vibration apart from when i put a CD or DVD in the drive.

Thank you in advance for any! help. What are the basic principles of computer case design?
I can help regarding the Thermal aspects of the case design (having done this a few times before proffesionally).

Everyone knows that to keep computer components cool you need 2 elements:

    1. Heatsinks (to disapate the heat *increase is surface area*)

    2. A ';liquid'; way of removing that disapated heat outside the case (air/water/oil)

Many people have started to experiment with water and oil, but i personally dont trust it, and would stick with air cooling.

Lets start with heat sinks: These can be made of many different materials, but the main two are Aluminium and Copper. Copper is better at disapating heat, due to its properties as a metal. Hence silver and gold are also good fr this, but a little expensive. If you want to disapate heat more efficiently, then use copper heat sinks.

Now yes, you get all these great big heatsinks (like the zalmans etc...) which look really cool, but they take up to much space for a form factor (and they are too noisey) You are better off using a retangular heatsink (remember the more fins there are, and the thinner the fins are, the better the heatsink is at its job. Also the method of creating the fins is also important.

A bonded fin (one which is welded to the base) is not so good. Extruded fins are a bit better. But skiving fins are the best (essentially these are cut into the block of metal, so its properties are least affected). Try looking at www.dynatron-corp.com for some good examples.

So, now you have heatsinks on your components, you need to decide if you want to have lots of little high speed fans or blowers sitting on each one, or whether you leave the little fans off, and go for ';passive'; component cooling. Now thi is normally only advised if you can cool air, then blow it through the case at high speed, and suck it out the other side. but thats noisey and expensive. So i would go for active cooling (but make sure you get low-speed, low noise fans (the bearing used is important but i wont go into bearings today)

NOTE: it is not about how fats the fans spin, it is about how much air they move per second (CFM) A big fan that spins slowly will move more air persecond than a small fan spinning fast.

So get the biggest fans you can.

The more air you move through the case, the better, so make sure you have one sucking air in, and one blowing air out (set them to run at the same speed.) If you have 2 x 12cm fans spinning at less than 1000rpm, then you will hardly even hear the noise they make.

NOTE ON DUST: fans work because the blade cut through the air, and scope it/move it in a direction. If the fan blades are dusty, they will not cut air aswell, and you can decrease the performance by over 50%!!!! Keep your fans clean. Use filters only where absolutely needed.

So, case design... begin by having all your components laid out on a surface (include a PCI graphics card riser) this means you can change the orientation of your graphics card if you need to. Rotates the card port by 90degrees, very handy in a form factor.

Your Motherboard is your basic foot print, so try and fit everything into a case that is the same size as that (and only 12cm wide!!!) Try it, and if you need more space, just do it little by little. 3D modelling is an advantage here. By the way, 12cm is chosen because it is the size of the fans i recommended.

It can be done, i have built a high performance games machine to 240mm x 150mm x 50mm in the past, and had it on near silent running.

As far as material goes, i have only ever used perspex and aluminium.

    Good luck.

Message me if you want some other ideas, i can send you some pics of my work.

    :o)

J2GWhat are the basic principles of computer case design?
that is a small hole that you are trying to suck air through if it is making more noise than the fan. If you can you could probably cut a hole on the panel that you can remove to work the the inside of the comuter. My ultra case has a hole in the removable panel right over the cpu heatsink that has a grate over it to filter stuff out.
Check out Vadim computers' website. They have some interesting stuff.
just water-cool it. then you wont need a new case. if you really want to make a new one badly though, metal is probably sturdiest.
You can make your case quiet by changing fans to low noise and fitting noise reduction foam inside the case sides. Always remember airflow is the key so fans should suck in air from the front and blow out the back passing over the motherboard etc on the way.

What is a good computer cases/chassis?

i am purchasing a new computer, can you recommend a good computer cases. not too expensive, not too cheapWhat is a good computer cases/chassis?
Have a look at this one:

    http://www.gamegiants.net/product_info.p鈥?/a>

Is the cooling fan on the computer case suppose to blow air in or out?

Does it matter or will one cool better than the other? I want to know that I screwed it on the right way.

Thanks. Is the cooling fan on the computer case suppose to blow air in or out?
Front fan is usually intake, rear or top fan usually exhaust. If there is a side panel fan, it is usually intake also; blowing towards motherboard.

This might be of help (no insults intended):

http://www.overclockers.com/tips1245/Is the cooling fan on the computer case suppose to blow air in or out?
The best form of cooling is to have a fan at the bottom front of the PC sucking air in and one at the top at the back sucking air out.

You also want to ensure that all the cables are neatly tied so that the air can flow unobstructed throught the PC and over the top of the CPU fan.
the processor fan blows the air inside where as smps fan blows the air out ... chck it out which one u are lookin for
It depends which way the fan is meant to go!

The one cooling fan on the power supply sucks air in... so if you are putting ONE extra fan it should blow air out or you'll have 2 fans sucking which means they tend to cancel out.

If you've got lots of fans, I'd guess suck in at the back blow out at the front.
if the fan is in the front or the side, have it blowing in. if it is in the back, have it blowing out
out i think to get the hot air out. not sure tho
The fan will probably work better if you have it sucking air into the PC....or if you have multiple fans just mix it up...like in mine I have 2 fans in the front sucking air in and one 120mm fan in the back blowing air back out. It just causes fresh air flow to help keep the components cool.
